Your Menopause Moment
How to Stay Healthy During the change and beyond.
I’m Dr. Christiane Northrup—The Original Menopause Doctor. And I’m Changing the Conversation Around ‘The Change’.
Today I’m giving a general overview about menopause and I’m sharing ways everyone can stay healthy during the perimenopausal transition and beyond.
I’ll also share one thing you should NOT do when you’re feeling “hormonal” duing this time.
What is menopause?
Menopause is a natural stage in a woman’s life that marks the end of her reproductive years. It is officially defined as the point when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. This transition occurs as the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone over time.
What is perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, when hormone levels—especially estrogen and progesterone—begin to fluctuate. This stage can start several years before menopause and is often marked by changes in the menstrual cycle, such as irregular periods, as well as symptoms like sleep disturbances, mood shifts, or changes in energy.
How can I support my body naturally during this time?
Supporting your body during perimenopause and menopause begins with understanding what it needs during this transition. As hormone levels shift, the body often becomes more responsive to lifestyle factors such as nutrition, stress, sleep, and movement.
Focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods, staying well hydrated, and supporting digestion can help maintain balance. Prioritizing rest and managing stress are also essential, as the body may become less tolerant of ongoing strain during this time. Regular movement, time outdoors, and maintaining a consistent daily rhythm can further support hormonal and overall health.
Just as important is learning to listen to your body’s signals. Symptoms often provide insight into where support is needed. By making small, consistent changes and working with your body rather than against it, you can navigate this transition with greater ease, stability, and well-being.

Why Anger is So Common in Menopause
There is a common stereotype of women becoming “crazy” at menopause. It’s our culture’s well-entrenched way of writing off women who, at menopause, often go through the process of reclaiming their lives. For many women this reclamation process includes getting in touch with anger that arises from unmet and unacknowledged needs..
How to Fire Up Your Metabolism at Midlife
You have probably heard that weight gain at midlife is due to your metabolism slowing down. And research shows that this is partially true: your basal metabolic rate decreases about one to two percent per decade after the age of 20. This means that permanent weight gain can begin early and continue beyond midlife
Quell Hot Flashes During Perimenopause
Do you know the many benefits of intermittent fasting? If you are like most people, you probably have been raised on “three square meals” every day. And chances are you also believe that breakfast is the most important meal.
How to Reverse Insulin Resistance at Midlife
You always have low levels of insulin circulating in your body. When insulin is out of balance, the result is abnormal blood sugar levels. High insulin levels can make you feel tired, bloated and cause sugar cravings. And, the more insulin you have circulating in your body, the harder it becomes to lose weight and burn fat.
How to Sleep Better at Midlife
Occasional problems with sleep are common at midlife, often secondary to hot flashes and night sweats, or anxiety and depression—which often occur together in midlife women. Between 20 and 40 percent of women have sleep disorders, and women in perimenopause often need more sleep and suffer from insomnia more...
Is Bleeding Normal at Your Age?
Many women experience heavy bleeding at some point, often in the years before menopause and typically due to the effects of estrogen dominance. And most women have been told that any bleeding after menopause is abnormal. Yet, did you know that postmenopausal bleeding is often not caused by...
Everything You Need to Know About HRT
The topic of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause, especially with bioidentical hormones, seems to raise more questions than answers. What Is Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder is a very common occurrence in women between the ages of 40-60 years. Symptoms include stiffness, pain, and limited range of motion in your shoulder. Most doctors believe frozen shoulder is caused by an injury, overuse, or from an underlying condition such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. But, any shoulder problem can lead to a frozen shoulder if you do not work to keep full range of motion.
Common Midlife Sexual Function Changes
While it is a common misconception that sexual desire and activity inevitably decrease at menopause, this does not have to be true for you. In fact, that “first-love” feeling of sexual desire can be experienced at any life-stage.
